4 Must-Haves For Your 1st Trimester (and 2 Things You Can Skip) | Beaufort and Bluffton, SC

Let’s get real for a second—there’s no shortage of pregnancy recommendations out there, and it can all feel a little overwhelming. What do you actually need, and what can you skip? Let’s go over a few essentials that can make your pregnancy journey smoother and, dare I say, more fun!

Pregnancy Journal – Your New Best Friend

If you haven’t already started, grab a pregnancy journal ASAP—trust me, it’s worth it! It’s not just about writing down cravings (although, yes, chocolate cravings will make an appearance). It’s the perfect place to track symptoms, emotional shifts, and early baby movements.

I’ll be honest, I started journaling back in my pregnancy days, and I’m so glad I did. Whenever I stumble upon my old journal, it’s like time-traveling right back to those precious moments.

Anti-Nausea Products – The First Trimester Lifesaver

Ah, morning sickness—my old friend.

We all know it’s not just in the morning, and it can be pretty rough. Ginger candies? Yes, please! And don’t forget magnesium supplements or acupressure wristbands (Sea-Bands are a lifesaver!). Personally, I was sick for what felt like the entire first trimester, and ginger was my go-to remedy. Ginger ale, ginger candy… I was all about it. Find what works for you!

Book Your Maternity & Newborn Photographer Early

Here’s a little pro tip: don’t wait until the last minute to book your photographer.

The best maternity and newborn photographers in Beaufort and Bluffton can book up quickly, and you definitely want to snag your spot early. (My calendar for newborn sessions fills up about six months in advance, so don’t wait!)

Weekly Bump Photos – Start Early, Love the Journey

Start snapping those weekly bump pics, even before your bump shows up. It’s such a fun way to capture your pregnancy journey as it unfolds. Find a spot with good natural light, wear the same outfit for consistency, and use a tripod or ask a friend to help. I wish I’d done this with my pregnancies—I totally regret not having those weekly progress photos! Pro tip: use your phone’s timer mode for easy self-portraits!

Skip These:

  • Stretch Mark Cream – Save your money! Stretch marks are mostly genetic, so unless you’re moisturizing for comfort, you don’t need to spend a fortune on creams.
  • Maternity Clothes – You’ve got time! No need to splurge just yet. Belly bands and flowy dresses will get you through the early months just fine.

Whether you’re in your first trimester or planning ahead, these simple items will make your pregnancy smoother and more memorable.

And if you’re ready to book your maternity or newborn session, take a peek at my Beaufort photography portfolio. Let’s make some beautiful memories together!
