What to wear to your maternity session?
The number one concern I get asked about, no matter what kind of session, is wardrobe!
For our maternity clients, we take a lot of the guess work out of it by offering our extensive Maternity Closet that contains over 100 different gowns and wardrobe pieces for you to wear. We have dresses from top designers like Katharina Hakaj Couture, Sew Trendy Accessories & Fillyboo in a wide variety of looks, colors and sizes.
But we also have the moms who want to be more true to their every day image. For that reason, here are our top tips for how to prepare your maternity session outfit!
Don’t follow trends
When you look back on your pictures 20 years from now, the last thing you want to think is “What was I wearing??”
Stick to colors that never go out of style like neutrals & pastels.
Colors – What to stick to, what to avoid
Try to stick with solid, neutral colors. If you must have color in your life, avoid anything that is neon or too bright – these colors never photograph well or true to color. Shades of white such as creams, ivory, beige, are always great picks.
When in doubt, tighter is better
Of course you want to be sure you are wearing the right size clothing but you want to make sure that your belly is emphasized in whatever it is you choose to wear. Form fitting Maxi dresses are perfect for your session because of this.
Loose fitting dresses or shirts can always benefit from being fitted at the top or adding a belt above your belly. This will cinch in the smallest part of your frame and bring out the belly as well.
Don’t shy away from pants
Leggings or pregnancy jeans can be matched with a cute shirt or an off the shoulder sweater to make an adorable outfit. Summer time, don’t shy away from a pair of nice shorts as well.
Accessories, shoes and more
Adding long necklaces to your outfit can really help define the shape of your changing body. The necklace laying on your bump will make sure we can see it from every angle and will draw attention to it.
Accessories such as hats are always a nice addition to your session. It allows us to change the look of an image with one simple thing.
Comfortable shoes are a must. If you can rock high heels, great, but don’t feel like it is a must do. Wedges are a great alternative that give you height and stretch your legs in a much more comfortable way. Depending on the location, barefoot might just be the way to go.
Make sure you are wearing a fitted bra that supports the girls. Preferably nude in color to avoid any see through areas.
Be you!
Most importantly, your fashion choice for photos should reflect you and your personality. While wanting the perfectly curated image from Pinterest sounds great, if a whole new wardrobe is in order to achieve it, is it really you!? Rock what you love – that’s what’s important!
