Doula Week | Doulas, only during labor? | Baufort Birth Photographer

World Doula Week

In honor of World Doula Week (March 22-28), we will be talking with our favorite Doula, Dawn, of Compassionate Care Doula.

Lowcountry Doula

Does a Doula only help during birth?

In addition to the Birth doula who helps facilitates the birth that you desire, there are 2 other types of doulas. Some doulas certify as one or more category to help best serve their client’s needs.

Antepartum Doulas provide support to a mother who has been put on bed rest or is experiencing a high risk-pregnancy. They provide informational, emotional, physical, and practical support in circumstances that are often stressful, confusing, and emotionally draining. They can also provide meal preparation and help find or facilitate childcare for siblings. They can accompany you to your provider appointments.

Postpartum Doulas provide support in the first weeks after birth. They provide informational support about feeding and caring for the baby. They provide physical support for lite cleaning, cooking meals, helping to organize and filling in when a new mother needs a break. They can run some errands or pick up groceries. They help the mother and baby bond. They can help with breastfeeding issues that may come up. Some doulas are Lactation consultants. They help the family adjust to having a new baby at home. They help relieve the caregivers so that they can get some rest. Some doulas also provide overnight care. They provide emotional support by encouraging a mother when she feels overwhelmed. They can accompany the parents for a Dr’s visit. Most doulas have a resource list for the parents should they need extra assistance. Postpartum doulas are trained to look for signs of postpartum depression. They can relieve some the burden. If need be, they can provide the parents with a therapist who may specialize in that area of expertise. Postpartum doulas can make the transition to the 4th trimester home much smoother
